Experiments in lockdown

A boy, a dog and and a bus

I’ve been getting to grips with digital painting over the last few months. It’s nothing like good old fashioned paint and canvas, but it has some advantages worth making the effort for.

The only comment I can offer which might be of any use is that illustrating digitally requires a different approach. Think of constructing your image layer by layer, much like a building or a sculpture. Its a slow and careful process which shouldn’t be rushed. I don’t think you save time compared to traditional methods. Why would you want to cut corners when you’ve spent time working on your style and process?

Here’s a short selection. I’d love to hear what you think if you have the time to comment below.

I am a children's book illustrator and author. I trained as a graphic designer, and have worked in publishing for over thirty years. Nowadays I work at Harper Collins running an inclusive global imprint called Kumusha Books. I still write and illustrate children's books though and enjoy every minute immersed in publishing!
